Can roller shades be used outdoors?

Roller shades aren’t just for inside – they can used outdoors!

Outdoor roller shades are increasingly popular in South Florida and can transfix your outdoor space to make it comfortable even in the hottest summer months. They can cut out the sun and heat and are available in a range of materials, opacities and colors.

You need to know that your outdoor shades can hold up outside. It’s important to opt for high-quality outdoor shades that will last.

Outdoor Roller Shades Versus Indoor Roller Shades

  • Outdoor patio shades, unlike indoor roller shades, need to hold up in the wind. With outdoor roller shades we reinforce them with either cable guides or zippered tracks

  • Indoor roller shades come in fabrics or screen shade materials, while outdoor roller shades come exclusively in screen shade vinyl materials that are weatherproof. We even have a fully blackout shade that is tailored for outdoor.

  • There is one roller shade you’ll only find outdoor – our retractable patio bug screen. This shade replicates a traditional fixed patio screen to keep out insects. But it’s more flexible than a fixed shade and can be rolled up when you want a completely open space.

  • While indoor shades can be made oversized, this is more typical with outdoor shades. We often install outdoor patio shades that are 15 feet or wider in one piece. Motorization is required for these large shades.

  • All of our outdoor shades are waterproof. Many fabric indoor shades are water resistant but not made to completely absorb water.

  • Outdoor shades also include retractable awnings. Our high-quality European style awnings are fully motorized.
